Key Change Token (KCT) Rejecting? How to Fix Your Prepaid Meter Rejecting Electricity Tokens
You just bought electricity at midnight, but your Mojec, Conlog, or Landis meter displays "FAILED" or "ERROR 30". Don't panic or freeze in the dark. Here is the step-by-step troubleshooting guide to reset your keypad and force-load your token.
It’s 11:45 PM. The heat is stifling, the mosquitoes are buzzing, and your prepaid meter just beeped its final warning before plunging your house into darkness.
You quickly open your app, buy ₦5,000 worth of electricity, copy the 20-digit token, and punch it into your Customer Interface Unit (CIU) keypad. You hold your breath, wait for the chime, and...
"FAILED" (or "ERROR 30", or "Error 06").
You try it again, slowly. "FAILED". You feel your blood pressure rising. The vendor has debited your account, you have a valid token, but your meter is acting like a stubborn gatekeeper.
Before you start planning to spend the night in your car or preparing a fiery email to your electricity distribution company (DisCo), let’s look at exactly why this happens and how to fix it yourself in 5 minutes.

1. Mismatched Meter Numbers (The 70% Reason)
The single most common reason for token rejection is that the token was generated for a different meter number. Even a single digit mistake during the purchase process will produce a completely invalid 20-digit token.
How to check:
Look at the receipt or SMS containing your token. Find the Meter Number printed on it. Now, go to your physical meter and compare the numbers. If they do not match exactly, the token is useless for your meter. You will need to contact the payment vendor or buy a new token using the correct meter number.---
2. The Key Change Token (KCT) Trap (Errors 70, 75, or 12)
If your meter number is correct but it still rejects the token, your meter is likely out of synchronization with the national grid. This happens when there is a tariff change or during mandatory security upgrades (like the TID Rollover update).
To fix this, your meter needs a Key Change Token (KCT). This is a set of two different 20-digit reset codes that must be entered before you enter your main electricity token.
How to load a Key Change Token:
1. Obtain the two 20-digit KCT codes from your DisCo (they are usually sent along with your purchase receipt if a change was triggered). 2. Enter the first 20-digit KCT code and press the enter button (often the red/blue button or "#"). 3. Wait for the screen to display "SUCCESS" or "ACCEPTED". 4. Enter the second 20-digit KCT code and press enter. 5. Once both KCT codes are accepted, enter your main 20-digit electricity token. It will load instantly.---
3. Communication Link Failures (Error 30 / E-5)
Many modern prepaid meters (especially MOJEC or Landis+Gyr) use a split system: the main meter box is high up on the electric pole, and you have a small keypad (CIU) plugged into a socket inside your parlor.
If the keypad cannot talk to the meter on the pole, it will display "Error 30" or "E-5".
How to restore communication:
* Plug it directly: Do not connect the keypad to an extension box. Plug it directly into a wall socket closest to the street or electric pole. * Batteries: If your keypad uses batteries, replace them with fresh AAA alkaline batteries. Low batteries weaken the signal transmission. * Check Phase: If your house uses three-phase power, try plugging the keypad into a socket connected to a different phase. If the phase the meter is on has no power, they cannot communicate. * Re-pair the units: Sometimes you need to manually pair the keypad to the meter by typing a code likeHES_MeterNumber or pressing a specific function button (refer to your brand manual).---
4. The Meter is in "Tamper" Mode
If someone tried to open the meter cover, or if there was a heavy power surge that tripped the safety switches, the meter will go into lock-down ("Tamper Mode"). When in tamper mode, no tokens will be accepted.
How to fix it:
Only your DisCo's technical team can reset a tampered meter. You will need to visit the nearest office of your utility provider (Ikeja Electric, Eko Electric, AEDC, etc.) with a photo of the meter screen to request a Tamper Reset Code.---
